Our stainless-steel spades, forks and shovels come in two styles: one with tubular steel handles with a molded plastic cover, and the other with kiln-dried ash handles. In general, the wooden-handled tools which are lighter and shorter are best suited to people of average height. If you are tall and do a lot of heavy work, or tend to leave your tools out in the rain (or snow!), the steel handle would be a better choice.
The beauty of stainless steel is that it is durable and scours well because it is non-rusting. We guarantee these tools fully and will replace any that fail you in use.
Each line includes a digging spade and fork (meant for heavy digging, ground preparation and harvesting), a smaller border spade and fork (for lighter work such as digging borders, transplanting perennials, and working in close quarters), and a transplant or rabbiting spade (designed for close transplant work that does not disturb surrounding plants).
The digging and border spades and forks are sold individually or as a matched pair, and all spades have treads to protect your footwear and make life easy for your arches. Apart from varying in type and strength of materials, our lines also differ in length and weight, so you should be able to find a tool that works well for you.
All exceed the British standard for strength and quality, which means for the digging tools you can apply 121 lb of force at the end of the handle and be confident it will not break. However, they are not designed to be indestructible, so we do not recommend them for uprooting saplings or removing boulders.
